ET CETERA

Bing Delyos was hired from the college radio station WMUC-FM to record the session.

For cost reasons, the digipak package was recycled from the Uncle Wiggly album "Jump Back, Baby". The Uncle Wiggly album had not sold well, so 300 digipaks were spray painted metallic silver in the backyard of Teen-Beat 267. The discs were inserted and then the case was sealed by an American Scene label which had the song titles et cetera. A 12-page booklet with lyrics was place inside. After the initial 300 copies had sold, the CDs were packaged in The Warm Series digipaks with the same sealing sticker.

RECORDING NOTES

The American Scene was intended to turn out much differently than what you hear on disc. I was listening to hardcore pretty heavily at this time in my life. It was 1996-97 and there was a huge revival of the genre especially in New England (Connecticut, where I was living at the time, seemed to be right in the center of it all). You can almost pick up some of the chug-chug influences of metalcore bands like Unbroken at the end of "Dead Dreams". The drums we recorded for the album were pretty heavy and I remember turning in all the overdubs to Mark R. and hearing him say "I'm not really into this." That's when I got back a remix of "Storm in August" which used a retro drum machine and looped live rim shots to carry the beat (along with Trevor's keyboard overlays). It sounded like a real radio-ready pop song to me - that's what I was really trying to create - and I realized that my social group was over-influencing where I wanted to go musically.

I couldn't be happier with how the record turned out. A lot of the minimal pop stuff that's popular now sounded so fresh back then - and Mark had an ear for this record that seemed ahead of its time. There's also an interesting dichotomy between man and machine, with the piano/violin and the keyboards/drum machines. I think that was a perfect analogy for the teenage years that are reflected in the lyrics of the album.
